Taiwan deploys US-made Humvees in military drills
Taiwan is conducting military exercises to counter any Chinese attack. As part of the exercise, the autonomous island has deployed the US-made advanced rocket launch system ‘HIMARS’ (HIMARS). Two trucks equipped with HIMARS were seen in Taichung city, off Taiwan’s central coast, on Saturday.
Taiwan deploys US-made Humvees in military drills
Taiwan conducts military exercises called ‘Han Kuang’ every year. However, this time the exercise is being carried out on the largest scale. Today was the fourth day of the 10-day exercise. Some weapons may be used in the exercise in the coming days. At the same time, more air force aircraft and naval vessels may join the exercise.
Lian-jia said that the launch system must be kept hidden from enemy eyes until the rocket is launched from HIMARS. However, military officials from various countries in the region said that the deployment of HIMARS in this war-like exercise is being closely monitored.
Taiwan claims democratically-ruled Taiwan as part of its territory. Beijing has also increased military pressure on the island over the past five years. China’s Foreign Ministry has called the exercise a “bogus exercise.” Taiwan, however, has been denying China’s claims. Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-ter has said that only the people of Taiwan will determine their future.
Taiwan received its first shipment of 11 HIMARS from the United States last year. It is expected to receive a total of 29 of these rocket launchers. Taiwan tested its first rocket from HIMARS in May. They are capable of traveling about 300 kilometers. As a result, Taiwan will be able to attack China’s southern province of Fujian using HIMARS.
